Dehumanizing with an artist’s hand

“Swallowed by Pictures: Dehumanizing with an artist’s hand.” New Haven Advocate Stephen Vincent Kobasa 4/3/08

Review of A New World: England’s First View of America

“If a photograph could steal an aboriginal soul, wouldn’t a watercolor portrait do so as well? The artist John White, his history rendered nearly anonymous by his common name, was a member of a 1585 expedition to the territory claimed as ‘Virginia’ by Sir Walter Raleigh in honor of his celibate queen. White made what he saw his own in a series of watercolors now being exhibited as A New World: England’s First View of America, until June 8 at the Yale Center for British Art.”
