Rep’s ‘Trouble in Mind’ probes still-relevant racial attitudes E. Kyle Minor New Haven Register 10/21/07
“In Alice Childress’ obscure, 1955 off-Broadway play ‘Trouble in Mind,’ Wiletta Mayer, an African-American actress, rehearses an anti-lynching play-within-a-play that could make her a star on the Great White Way. Before she gets to test Sardi’s stance on open admission, however, she implodes under pressure from Al Manners, her well-meaning but condescending Caucasian director.
“E. Faye Butler, who plays Wiletta in Yale Repertory Theatre’s production of ‘Trouble in Mind,’ running Friday through Nov. 17, couldn’t believe, upon first reading the play that it was written over 50 years ago.”
