Casino Cachet: Massachusetts goes all in on casino gamble. What’s art got to do with it?
By Christopher Arnott, New Haven Advocate 9/27/07
“Massachusetts has gambled on its residents’ gambling instincts before. In the early ’80s, it justified starting a lottery by saying proceeds would fund the arts. When that turned out more profitable than foreseen, the arts designation was withdrawn. Casino plans are floated using the same vague logic—it’s good for culture (not just clubs and theaters but Native American museums!) and will generate taxes used to fund stuff that often gets cut, like the arts.”
