Robert Colescott, “Nouvelle Cuisine.” Image from The New Britain Museum of American Art.
“[Robert] Colescott is one of 65 San Francisco Bay area artists featured in ‘California to Connecticut: The Joanne and William Rees Collection,’ an exhibit opening Friday at the New Britain Museum of American Art and running through July 3. But his work is one of the best examples of what California artists would affectionately call ‘Bad Painting.’
“The work in this collection is linked by the artists’ dismissal of the rules for painting established by the East Coast elite.”
